Escaping the ‘battery farm of learning’

This post from Nick Shackleton-Jones on Linked In connected with a few thoughts that emerged from the UK Coaching Summit event yesterday and the stimulating ‘learning experience’ facilitated by Marianne Davies and Martin Dighton followed by Rachel Hooper & Sarah Harris from British Rowing…

Learning content is everywhere and organisations should not think that ‘their content’ is the only content that should be relevant….

…instead we need to come up with creative ways to recognise the skills the have been developed from wherever they gained the insight from.

Compliance learning is like force feeding battery hens…it really needs to be a thing of the past…especially when your chickens (learners) are volunteers!

…we need to leave breadcrumbs of useful knowledge (or a ‘field of carrots’) for our free range chicken learners!

Learning organisations should consider whether they are educators doing ‘teaching’ (putting knowledge into people) or ‘recognisers’ of the expertise people already have (highlighting the skills that are already there)!

If you would like to explore how we can shift our thinking away from compliance models and build towards a learning landscape that is diverse, inclusive and engaging…please drop me a line!
